What is Psoriasis?

In general, psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious disease caused when cells mature so rapidly that dead skin doesn’t have time to shed, causing raised patches of dead skin to form. It’s characterized by silver/white scabs covering red patches or lesions on the skin.

However, psoriasis is much less common than dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Only 3% of the population develop the disease (though scientists believe 10% inherit genes with the predisposition).

If you think you have psoriasis know that cases can range from mild (covering less than 5% of the body) to severe (covering more than 30% of the body) and that 50% of psoriasis cases are located on the scalp.

Psoriasis of the Scalp

Scalp psoriasis is found exclusively on the scalp. It will resemble raised scale-like plaques with red irritated patches underneath.  It is believed to be triggered by a myriad of things including an immune-system malfunction, stress, use of steroids, extreme cold, and injury/infection of the skin.

Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

If you think you’re suffering from psoriasis you should consult your doctor.  A proper diagnosis and treatment plan is essential before proceeding.  However, keep Denorex in mind; upon diagnosis many doctors will recommend starting with topical treatments that include salicylic acid and coal tar (both active ingredients found in Denorex products).

Salicylic acid smoothes the skin by promoting the shedding of psoriatic scales. Thoroughly shampooing your hair and scalp with Extra Strength Denorex® Dandruff Shampoo & Conditioner gently medicates your skin while loosening and washing away dead cell build-up.

Coal-tar helps slow the rapid growth of skin cells.   A weekly routine using Therapeutic Denorex® Maximum Itch Dandruff Shampoo & Conditioner will alleviate your symptoms and reduce your flakes and scaling substantially.
